London-based curator/performer and serial digresser David Ellis received early training in 1976 under legendary dancer/teacher Lindsay Kemp(mentor to David Bowie) introducing him to key elements of improvised live-art. In 1993 he founded Puzzleclub a platform for cross-disciplinary art forms with BBC writer Hattie Naylor in parallel with his increasingly regular detours throughout Eastern Central Europe where he ferreted for it’s ‘lesser-known,neglected histories ‘. Here he adopted the self-assigned role of ‘rogue cultural attache without portfolio’ representing Index-on-censorship, Institute of Contemporary Art, Anthology Films Archives New York,The Horse Hospital and various underground experimental film collectives.
Between 1993-2004 Ellis worked with Lithuanian artists/ filmmakers eschewing institutional inertia by curating ad-hoc film screenings off the officially designated map.
This curatorial /activism on the periphery is leavened by his work as an actor/supporting artist for mainstream Film/TV and as Drama facilitator. In 2014 in tandem with former prisoner Dean Stalham he founded Made Corrections initiating a program of rehabilitation through art in Juvenile Correctional Facilities in both Kaunas,Lithuania and Buzius,Romania.
In 2016 he curated VHS in Off-World / Dubbing as Subversion at the Close-up Film Centre,London as a homage to Romanian film curator/critic Irina Margareta Nistor.
Ellis is currently acting as co-curator alongside Monica Sebestyen the Director/Owner of Cinema Arta in Cluj both of who are equally committed to it’s reopening in 2018.
